Abstract

Since 1989, Japan and Taiwan has continued a joint Sabo study. On September 11, 2007, the 2007 Taiwan-Japan Joint Study “Review Session concerning Countermeasures for Earthquake lake and Sediment-related Disaster Observation” was held in Beinan Township, Taitung County, by organizers, Luodong District Office, Forestry Bureau, Agriculture Council, Executive Yuan and Disaster Prevention Research Center of National Cheng Kung University, and by a co-host, Chinese Institute of Disaster Prevention. Japan’s team leader, Yasuo TOMOMATSU (Vice-president of Japan Sabo Association and board chairperson of Kyosei) and 4 members participated in this forum at the invitation of the organizers. Research and studies on 2 issues from Japan and on 2 issues from Taiwan were presented, and an active dialogue between these groups was made.
In addition, they visited LongQuan Shi (earthquake lake), Chih-Shang Township, Taitung County, a debris flow disaster area FengYi Keng, and a large-scale-collapsed-area Cao Bu, and they exchanged opinions about measures for sediment-related disaster prevention and river control.
