Japan-Taiwan  Joint Research Conference on Sabo

From December 10 (Sun.) to 16 (Sat.), 2023, a 14-member delegation from Taiwan, consisting of researchers from Chinese Soil and Conservation Society and Taiwan Disaster Prevention Society, visited Japan to participate in the Japan-Taiwan Joint Research Meeting on Sabo held in 2023.

Due to the worldwide spread of the new coronavirus, this was the first time in about four years that the meeting was held in Japan.The 2023 Japan-Taiwan Sabo Joint Research Symposium was held at Sabo Kaikan in Tokyo on Monday, December 11. The symposium featured four presentations by the Japanese side and four by the Taiwanese side on the latest measures and findings in research, as well as an active Q&A session and exchange of opinions.

The Japan-Taiwan Sabo Exchange Meeting was held at Sabo Kaikan on Tuesday, December 12, and from Wednesday, December 13 to Friday, December 15, the participants visited Sabo projects in the Ashio area, the hillside works at Nantaizan Onagi, collapse countermeasures at Kegon-no-taki, sabo projects at the Oya River, the site of the Great Ikari Collapse, and the Nanma Dam under construction for flood control and water utilization. The tour also included a visit to the Nanma Dam under construction for flood control and water utilization.

During the inspection tour, they also paid a courtesy visit to the Tochigi Prefectural Government and met with Mr. Tomikazu Fukuda, Governor of Tochigi Prefecture. They talked about the relationship between Tochigi Prefecture and Taiwan and expectations for further mutual exchange in tourism, economy, and other areas, exceeding the scheduled time.

We would like to thank the Sabo(Erosion Control) Department of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Kanto Regional Development Bureau, Watarase River Office, Nikko Sabo Office, Tochigi Prefecture, NPO Ashio Green Growing Association, Tochigi Prefecture Sabo Volunteer Association, and many others for their generous cooperation in hosting this Japan-Taiwan Joint Study Group on Erosion Control.
