Abstract | The general meeting of the 37th Typhoon Committee was held at the conference room of the Shanghai Municipal Meteorological Administration in Shanghai City, China on November 16-21, 2004, under the sponsorship of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). A total of 11 countries participated in this meeting, including the U.S., China, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Korea, North Korea, Philippines, Thailand and Japan (Cambodia and Laos were absent). Various efforts being taken in each country in the fields of meteorology, hydrology, and disaster mitigation were reported. In particular, it was confirmed to put emphasis on the following items as the direction of future efforts. (1) Development of non-structural measures will be primarily promoted as the measures for flooding and sediment-related disasters. (2) Disaster prevention education, communication, and training to the local people will be emphasized. (3) Development of inexpensive and easy-to-use devices such as a simple type rain gauge which was introduced at the Seoul workshop will be promoted as the device to complement the observations of a meteorological agency. (4) Communalization of data will be promoted among countries. The next workshop will be held in Malaysia around August in 2005, including on-site lectures with the theme of “sediment-related disasters”. The next general meeting of the Typhoon Committee will be held in Vietnam around November 2005. |
