The two earthquake-ridden countries Taiwan, which experienced a large earthquake called Chichi Earthquake on September 21, 1999, and Japan, which was hit by the Mid Niigata Prefecture (Chuetsu) Earthquake in 2004, decided to hold a joint meeting to study measures for sediment-related disasters caused by earthquakes and eight members of the Chinese Soil and Water Conservation Society paid a visit to Japan from July 10 to 17, 2005, which included the “Conference on Earthquakes and Erosion Control” held on July 11 and 15. In the meeting on 11, the Sabo Department of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan gave lectures about “Sediment-related disasters in 2004,” “Overview of the Chuetsu Earthquake” and “Erosion control in Japan.” On 15, lectures were offered on “Sediment-related disasters and disaster prevention in Taiwan” by Taiwan and on “Sediment-related disasters caused by Chuetsu Earthquake” by Professor Satoshi Tsuchiya of Shizuoka University, followed by a lively discussion among the participants including those from Japan. Between 12 and 14, the team members visited Higashi-takezawa, Terano Districts (which are river channel blockages) and the Asahi River Basin in the jurisdiction of Yuzawa Sabo Office. Subsequently, they inspected the jurisdiction of Tateyama Sabo Work Office, which includes Mt. Tombi, a mountain that suffered a massive collapse in Hietsu Earthquake in 1858. |
