Jan. 11 China Landslide At around 8:20 a.m., a large-scale landslide occurred in Gaopo Village, Zhenxiong County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province in the southwest of China, burying 16 houses in debris and killing 46 people. Continuous rainfall and snowfall that started at the end of December appear to be the cause of the landslide. To date, more than 1,000 rescue personnel have been dispatched to the affected area. According to Yunnan Province authorities, the landslide was about 300 meters long and about 80 meters wide and the debris discharged reached a depth of approximately 30 meters.
Jan. 25 Ecuador Collapse A collapse occurred near a mine in the southern inland province of Azuay, killing at least 12 and injuring 20.
Jan. 27 Indonesia Collapse A collapse occurred during the rainy season in Nagari Sungai Batang Village, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province, leaving at least 16 dead and 17 missing. In addition, another collapse hit the nearby village of Tanjung Sani, burying 20 houses and killing at least 17 people.
Feb. 6 Pakistan Debris flow A debris flow occurred in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to seasonal heavy rainfall that had started on February 4, carrying away a number of houses and leaving 29 dead. A total of 75 people were injured in the province and 1,400 houses were partially or completely destroyed by the continuous heavy rain.
Feb. 17 Indonesia Collapse A number of collapses occurred near Manado, Northern Sulawesi Province, due to seasonal heavy rainfall. A total of 14 were killed in four villages.
Mar. 1 Philippines Landslide At around 9:50 a.m., a landslide occurred on the hillside slope near a geothermal power plant in Kananga on Leyte Island, directly hitting an EDC-owned building. Of 45 members of the Upper Mahiao Project who were working in the building, 14 were killed.
Mar. 17, 18 Brazil Collapse Multiple collapses occurred simultaneously in a mountainous area in Petropolis in the eastern province of Rio de Janeiro, a city 65km north of Rio de Janeiro City, due to heavy rainfall that lasted from the midnight of March 17 to March 18. As a result, 31 were killed. According to Petropolis City authorities, the amount of damage totaled 6 million dollars. In the city, 18 were injured and 1,466 were either left homeless or forced to evacuate, as well. This area has been previously hit by heavy rainfall-induced flood and landslide, leaving more than 900 dead in January 2011.
Mar. 25 Indonesia Collapse A collapse hit Cililin Village, West Bandung Regency, West Java Province on Java Island, engulfing nine houses. Military and police searches resulted in 24 bodies being found.
Mar. 29 China Collapse At around 6:00 a.m. on March 29, a large-scale collapse hit a gold mine located at an altitude of 4,600 meters in Maizhokunggar County, east of Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, burying 83 workers alive. The workers’ lodging was engulfed by 2 million m3 of debris from the collapse of a 3 km-long slope. A total of 1,000 rescue personnel, consisting of police officers, fire fighters, and medical doctors, brought 200 vehicles, 15 dogs and life detectors to the stricken site. Despite their rescue efforts at the hillside using the rescue dogs and the radar life detectors, the rescue team made slow progress due to poor weather, altitude sickness and the risk of another collapse. All of the gold mine workers were Han Chinese except for two Tibetans. Most came from the provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan as migrant workers.
Mar. 31 Colombia Collapse As many as 137 heavy rain-induced disasters occurred by the end of March in Colombia where the rainy season had started. Forty-nine were killed in floods, 42 by collapsed houses due to storms and 40 by collapses including cliff failures. The most damaged was the Pacific Ocean-facing southern area of Choco, where 56,770 people suffered from flood damage or were forced to evacuate and more than 500 houses were partially or completely destroyed.
Apr. 23 Afghanistan Debris flow A heavy rain-induced flash flood hit the northern part of the country, leaving 11 dead and three missing. Some 1,000 houses were partially or completely destroyed by a flood in the surrounding areas.
Apr. 25 Ecuador Collapse A heavy rainfall in late winter caused a number of floods and collapses in recent weeks. The most affected was Canton Quinindé, Tabete Town, Esmeraldas Province, where a collapse killed 16 and seriously damaged houses and farms.
May. 7 Philippines Volcanic eruption At around 8:00 a.m. on May 7, a small-scale phreatic eruption occurred on Mt. Mayon, Albay Province in the southeast part of Luzon Island. Ash column reached 500 meters in height, spewing out ashes and cinders to the surrounding area. Of the 21 people in an international tour group who were climbing within a 6 km-danger range from the vent, a total of five were killed by the falling cinders, including three Germans, one Spaniard and one Filipino, and nine were injured, including Thai and other nationals.
May. 11 India Landslide In the early morning of May 11, a large-scale landslide occurred in the vicinity of Aizawl in Mizoram State, a city located between Bangladesh and Myanmar, due to a tropical depression-induced heavy rainfall, leaving 10 dead and 7 missing.
May. 14 Sri Lanka Collapse Heavy rain-induced collapses occurred in various areas as Tropical Depression Mahasen passed, causing seven deaths and destroying 3,881 houses. (See the event on May 16 in Bangladesh for a related story.)
May. 16 Bangladesh Collapse In the morning of May 16, a collapse occurred in the southern district of Patuakhali, after Tropical Depression Mahasen made landfall. Some 1.5 million households in 10 west-coast districts were affected, where 17 people were killed by a flood along with the collapse.
Late May ~ mid July Nepal Collapse A number of floods, collapses and debris flows occurred in 29 districts due to a heavy rainfall during the rainy season that had started at the end of May, killing 59 people, injuring 29 people and destroying 2,079 houses across the country.
Jun. 17 India Collapse,
Debris flow		 Collapses and debris flows occurred frequently in the mountainous area of north state of Uttarakhand due to front-induced heavy rainfall during the rainy season. These left about 6,054 dead or missing and 4,473 injured. The affected area was filled with a number of visitors for pilgrimage and sight-seeing. At one time, 108,653 people were cut off due to road closure before security units rescued them one by one and provided relief supplies.
Jul. 10 China Landslide,
Debris flow		 A landslide and a debris flow occurred due to a heavy rainfall that had started on July 8 in Sichuan Province. In Zhongxing, Chengdu City, a large-scale landslide occurred, burying 17 people alive from 11 households. In Changjiapin, Yingxiu Town, Wenchuan County, debris flows occurred in several mountain streams, causing road closure and isolation of the area for some time. In addition, the Minjiang river washed over the riverbank and overflowed in Chengdu City, causing collapses of a number of buildings and premises and leaving nine dead and 62 missing.
Aug. 3 Afghanistan Debris flow A number of heavy rain-induced flashfloods hit 13 villages in Surobi District, Kabul Province, located east of Kabul City, the capital of the country. These flashfloods killed 42 people, completely destroyed 426 houses and seriously damaged farms, domestic animals and fruit trees.
Aug. 14 - 21 Yemen Debris flow A number of floods and debris flows occurred in eight jurisdictions, located mostly in the northern region, due to rainfall that had started on August 14. They resulted in the deaths of 40 people and damage to the houses and farms of 23,500 people.
Aug. 20 China Debris flow In the middle of the night on August 20, a debris flow occurred due to showers that had hit Haixi, in the northwest province of Qinghai, flowing away 21 workers from the construction site to death.
Early Aug. ~ late Aug. Pakistan Debris flow A number of debris flows occurred mainly in hilly and mountainous areas in the northern half of the country due to concentrated heavy rains during the rainy season in August. As a result, a total of 234 people were killed, 1,129 people were injured, 1.5 million people were affected and more than 79,000 houses were partially or completely destroyed in the provinces of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA, and P.A.X.
Aug. 21 China Flood,
Collapse		 Widespread rain clouds developed by Typhoon Trami brought the heaviest rainfall in the past 50 years to the northeast province of Liaoning, China. This caused floods and landslides in the area, leaving 63 dead and 101 missing.
Aug. 26 Mexico Collapse Tropical Depression Fernand made landfall from the Gulf of Mexico, bringing a heavy rainfall in Veracruz State. This caused 16 collapses in the state, resulting in road closure. A collapse occurred in Roca de Oro District, Yecuatla City in the same state, burying 13 alive resulting in death..
Sep. 6 Vietnam Collapse Collapses and debris flows occurred in various areas due to a heavy rainfall in the northern part of the country in the afternoon of September 6, killing a total of 25 people. This includes 10 deaths in Lao Cai Province, three each in the provinces of Thai Nguyen, Lai Chau and Vinh Phuc, two each in the provinces of Lang Son and Dien Bien and one each in the provinces of Ha Giang and Son La. In addition, 139 houses were partially or completely destroyed and 6,800 hectares of fields were submerged.
Sep. 10 ~ 19 Mexico Collapse On September 10, Tropical Depression Manuel and Hurricane Ingrid simultaneously approached the coastal area of the Pacific Ocean and caused another collapse in Manzanatitla, Veracruz Province, after the previous disaster at the end of August. The collapse engulfed two houses, leaving 13 dead. After this event, another collapse occurred and engulfed workers during a debris removal activity as well as a bus, killing 12 people. Across the country, a total of 97 were killed due to the continuous rainfall. Especially, the debris flow and collapse in the southwest state of Guerrero killed 65.
Sep. 22 - 26 Philippines Collapse,
Debris flow		 The passing Tropical Depression Paolo brought a heavy rainfall, causing 12 collapses and 3 debris flows in Zambales Province, Region III, and in Batangason Province, Region IV, in the southwest part of Luzon Island and other regions. The most damaging among them was the collapse in Zambales, which killed 31 and injured 6. In addition, a debris flow left one dead and 3 missing.
Sep. 26 Bolivia Collapse Two buses running on a mountain road from La Paz, a city in the west part of the country, to Caranavi were engulfed in a collapse. One of the buses was buried and the other was carried away to a river running at the bottom of the cliff. As a result, 21 people were killed and dozens were lightly or heavily injured.
Oct. 15 Philippines Earthquake,
Collapse		 At around 8:15 a.m., a magnitude-7.2 earthquake directly hit Bohol Island in the central region of Central Visayas, damaging public facilities and some 67,000 houses. The earthquake also caused human suffering in the entire area of Region VII, including Cebu Island and Siquijor Island, with 222 dead, eight missing and 796 injured. Ninety percent of this human suffering took place on Bohol Island, mainly from collapse of buildings. In Loon and other districts on the island, 15 slope failures occurred, causing a total of 15 deaths, of which eight were in Loon and seven were in other districts, due to debris that engulfed the victims.
Oct. 16 Japan Debris flow The passing Typhoon Wipha brought a heavy rainfall to Izu Oshima (island), Tokyo. From 12:00 on October 15 to 7:00 on the next day, a total precipitation of 824 mm was measured with the maximum hourly record of 118.5 mm between 3:00 and 4:00 on October 16, which was reported from Oshima precipitation station. This heavy rainfall triggered a debris flow in Motomachi district at around 2:30 on October 16. The flow overflowed the watershed boundary, engulfing settlements in the area. This resulted in 36 dead and 3 missing. In addition, 71 houses were completely destroyed, 40 half-destroyed and 92 partially destroyed.
Dec. 17 Brazil Collapse,
Debris flow		 A depression brought a continuous heavy rainfall in the states of Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais, located next to southeast state of Rio de Janeiro, causing flood and sediment-related disasters. Up until December 26, 45 people were killed and 64,000 were forced to evacuate. An emergency rule was declared in these states, to which the President made visits.
