Venue: Country,City Japan, Tokyo
Date from June 12 to 16, 2017
Detail

"The 10th Japan-Italy Conference on Sediment Disaster Prevention Technologies" was held in Japan from June 12 to 16, 2017. This conference was postponed due to the earthquake in the central part of Italy in 2016.

Prior to the conference, the Italian participants visited the afflicted areas of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake and observed the countermeasure situation after the disaster from June 13 to 14.

(Kumamoto earthquake)

In the conference on June 15, the both sides introduced their efforts and exchanged opinions on the theme of "sediment disaster countermeasures and the risk evaluation of landslides".

As the keynote speeches, Mr. Koji Nishiyama (Director General of Sabo Department in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) introduced the outline and future strategies of sabo works in Japan, and Dr. Faust Guzzetti (Director of Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection in the National Research Council) introduced the outline of the 2016 earthquake sequence in central Italy.

In the technical session, "Deep Drainage and Structural Countermeasures in Large-scale Earth Slides" by Dr. Alessandro Corsini (Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of Modena end Reggio Emilia) and on "Interpretation of Landslide Mechanisms based on Numerical Modeling" by Dr. Pier Nicola Lollino (Head of Bari branch, CNR IRPI) were presented. From Japanese side the presentations on "Countermeasures for Large-scale Landslide Triggered by 2016 Kumamoto earthquake" by Dr. Wataru Sakurai (Director of Sabo Planning Division, National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management) and on "Efforts to Prolong the Service Life of Landslide Countermeasures" by Dr. Wataru Takeshita (Chief Researcher of Landslide Research Team, Public Works Research Institute) were implemented. The participants shared information on the current conditions of sediment disasters and measures to prevent them, which are issues that both countries are facing. and active exchange of opinions was carried out.

Participants of the conference in Tokyo

On June 16, "Japan-Italy Joint Workshop on Sediment Disaster Prevention" was held in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture sponsored by NILIM and 28 participants from various research organizations attended. In the workshop, the latest studies on prediction and monitoring technology of sediment disaster were introduced and discussed.
