Detail
The “7th Japan-Korea Technical Conference on Sediment-related Disaster Prevention” was held in the Republic of Korea on Oct. 21-25, 2008.
The main session, which took place on Oct. 22, was started with the presentations by Director Choi Jun Seok of Forest Engineering and Rehabilitation Division, Korea Forest Service, and Director Hiroshi Makino of Sabo Planning Division, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan. After each presentation, active discussions followed.
Japanese participants introduced sabo administration-related issues and efforts; measures against sediment-related disasters and river course blockage (landslide dams); and a warning and evacuation system and related activities.
Korean participants made presentations on such topics as measures against sediment-related disasters after forest fires and greening-related issues. Although natural and social environments of both countries differ, sabo-related mutual understanding was deepened through the conference.
It was agreed that the Korean side would start studying for the establishment of sediment-related disaster database which was proposed by the Japan side as the cooperative research between the two countries.
