The 2013 Taiwan-Japan Joint Research Conference on Sabo was held in Taiwan on November 3 through November 8, 2013. A study team consisting of ten survey members and two officials of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism attended the conference from Japan.

At the technical session on November 4, Japanese participants gave six presentations and Taiwanese participants four presentations on sabo-related surveys and research, followed by a general discussion by all participants. On November 5, a sabo officials’ conference was held, where Japanese and Taiwanese participants each gave presentations on three topics. In addition, both parties agreed to produce an interim summary as considerable progress has been made on the research themes determined by the two countries, including deep landslides and large-scale sediment discharge.
As a field trip, conference participants visited the following sites and had discussions and exchanges of opinions at each one: 1) a landslide dam bursting experiment conducted at the research forest of the National Chung Hsing University; 2) Taomi Village, Puli Township, Nantou County, which has been reconstructed after the Chi-Chi earthquake disaster (September 21, 1999), and a damaged temple located at the epicenter; 3) the Chi-Chi Weir suffering from severe sediment discharge from upstream; 4) Wanshan Village, Maolin District, Kaohsiung City, and Laiyi Village, Laiyi Township, Pingtung County, both of which are sites restored from damage by Typhoon Morakot in 2009; and 5) a site in Taipei City that has been redeveloped after removing houses at risk of sediment-related disaster.
