Since 1989, Japan and Taiwan have continued to work on a collaborative study of erosion control. On November 1, 2005, "2005 Taiwan-Japan Joint Conference on Sediment-related Disaster Prevention" hosted by the Taiwan Disaster Prevention Society, Central Geological Survey of the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Executive Yuan and the Hualien County Government was held in Nantou City, Taiwan. An investigation team of six members from Japan led by Mr. Koichi Kondo took part in this symposium, in which results of investigation and research were presented on four themes by Japan and seven themes by Taiwan. Following the symposium, a tour was conducted to the site of the massive slope failure (Teng-chih Forest Road collapse) caused by Typhoon Haitang (1,800 mm/three days) that hit Pingtung County of Taiwan in July 2005, the erosion control facilities built using ecological construction methods (within the jurisdictions of Pingtung Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau and the 4th Engineering Office of the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau), etc. to exchange opinions about prevention of sediment-related disasters in Taiwan.
